WHO
WE ARE
Who we are...
Southern California Keeshond
Rescue, Inc is
a small 100% volunteer 501(c)(3) non profit charitable
organization located in Simi Valley, CA.
We do not have a kennel facility, nor do we have paid
staff. Most of our volunteers have full time jobs
Monday through Friday, and spend their evenings and
weekends rescuing dogs from the animal shelters, grooming
and caring for the dogs, meeting with prospective families
and completing adoptions. Our dogs stay in foster
homes until adoption, and are shown by appointment only
to approved families.
We rescue Keeshond dogs
from animal shelters where they face possible euthanasia,
and from owners who are unable or unwilling to
care for them. After rescue, volunteers
foster the dogs in their homes, providing them with
wholesome food, breed specific grooming, and appropriate
veterinary care. The volunteers have the dogs
examined by a veterinarian, tested for heartworms, immunized,
and spayed/neutered before the dogs are placed in permanent
homes.

WHAT
WE DO
What we do...
We rescue Keeshond dogs
from animal shelters where they face possible euthanasia,
and from owners who are unable or unwilling to
care for them. After rescue, volunteers
foster the dogs in their homes, providing them with
wholesome food, breed specific grooming, and appropriate
veterinary care. The volunteers have the dogs
examined by a veterinarian, tested for heartworms, immunized,
and spayed/neutered before the dogs are placed in permanent
homes.
As needed, the volunteers also provide basic training
on manners and housebreaking, socialization, and other
care and rehabilitation necessary to help the dogs recover
from abuse, neglect, or medical conditions and become
desirable pets. The volunteers evaluate each dog’s needs
and personality, and screen potential adoptive owners
carefully, including interviewing them, visiting their
homes, and checking references. They place dogs with
approved applicants, matching them carefully according
to the needs and personalities of the people and dogs.
After adoption, the volunteers remain available to answer
the new owners’ questions and provide them with support
as needed. Rescuing, fostering, and placing the dogs
in new homes constitute the majority of organization’s
activities.
The balance of the organization’s activities are devoted
to educating the public regarding the humane care and
treatment of dogs. Volunteers answer questions by telephone,
email and at public events, providing advice and literature
on topics such as responsible dog ownership, spaying/neutering,
training, and care of dogs. Volunteers participate in
the annual Pet Expo, showcasing rescue dogs in the Keeshond
Club booth, highlighting the beneficial effects of humane,
positive training methods, and demonstrating good relationships
between dogs and owners. Similar demonstrations are
held at the Keeshond Club of Southern California annual
clinic.
